OCT 2022Project update

Transport for NSW is progressing planning for the upgrade of the Princes Highway between Jervis Bay Road and Hawken Road.

This six kilometre section of the highway has been identified as stage one of the project and the highest priority of the planned 20-kilometre upgrade from Jervis Bay Road to Sussex Inlet Road.

The project includes upgrading the existing highway to two lanes in each direction, separated by a median barrier to improve safety. The remainder of the upgrade will be delivered at a later stage.

Project information

Since 2011 the Australian and NSW Governments have invested $2.5 billion in upgrading the Princes Highway. This has transformed and better connected communities, employed thousands of local workers, improved safety, eased traffic congestion, and grown regional economies. The Australian and NSW Governments have now committed a further $1.9 billion to upgrade the Princes Highway between Jervis Bay Road at Falls Creek and the Victorian border.

The six kilometre section between Jervis Bay Road and Hawken Road has been identified as the priority section for upgrade and will progress first to construction. The prioritisation of the northern section follows assessments into safety, traffic efficiency, connectivity needs and environmental conditions.

The Federal Government has committed $400 million and the NSW Government will contribute $100 million to the Jervis Bay Road to Hawken Road upgrade. Prioritising the section between Jervis Bay Road and Hawken Road will enable the project to connect with the Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway intersection upgrade project, on track to start early work in late 2022.

The Princes Highway between Jervis Bay Road and Sussex Inlet Road is currently an undivided road, one lane in each direction, with limited overtaking opportunities and significant increases in traffic volumes during peak tourist periods. This situation has resulted in a poor safety history – with 126 crashes, including five fatal crashes and 42 serious injury crashes, on this section of the highway between 2014 and 2018.

These upgrades will provide a safer corridor for all transport users and support increased capacity and traffic efficiency.

A proposed upgrade on the Princes Highway between Jervis Bay Road and Sussex Inlet Road would help transform communities, create better and more mobile regional centres, deliver a more resilient transport network, improve safety, ease traffic congestion and grow regional economies.

The upgrade would address the 126 crashes including five fatal crashes and 42 serious injury crashes on this section of highway in the five years from 2014 to 2018.
