OCT 2022Traffic changes and out of hours work on Nelson Bay Road

The project team will be implementing changes to the traffic arrangements within the project in October.

We will be working out of hours at night to connect the new road alignment to the existing road. The work includes asphalting, line marking and adjustments to the concrete safety barriers.

Night work will be carried out between 6pm and 6am over two consecutive nights between Monday 17 October and Monday 31 October, weather permitting.

Following the night work, motorists heading towards Nelson Bay on Nelson Bay Road will be realigned onto a section of new road. Motorists heading towards Newcastle will remain on the existing road alignment.

Lane closures, traffic control and a 40km/h reduced speed limit will be in place during work hours and may affect travel times. Short term stops may be required at times.

Regular work hours are between 7am to 6pm on weekdays and between 8am and 1pm on Saturday.

Project information

The NSW Government is investing $275 million to improve safety and travel times on Nelson Bay Road. The duplication of Nelson Bay Road is being delivered in stages. Early work on the project to upgrade the intersection of Nelson Bay Road and Medowie Road and the intersection of Nelson Bay Road and Lemon Tree Passage Road has been completed.

Transport for NSW is investing $26 million in the duplication of a one-kilometre section of Nelson Bay Road from Salt Ash to Bobs Farm.

This section will run from 900 metres east of Marsh Road at Salt Ash to 1.9 kilometres east of Marsh Road at Bobs Farm and deliver a safer and more efficient road for the 25,000 motorists who use it each day.

Transport for NSW has engaged Daracon to deliver this work.

This one-kilometre dual carriageway upgrade includes:

  • 3.5-metre travel lanes
  • 2.5-metre shoulders
  • a concrete median separation barrier
  • two connected retaining walls
  • utility relocations
  • fauna exclusion fencing to ensure wildlife is protected

The $26 million investment in the duplication of this one-kilometre section of Nelson Bay Road will improve safety, travel times and traffic flow for the 25,000 motorists who use this vital connection each day.

Daracon has been engaged to deliver the work on behalf of Transport for NSW.

Work commenced in January 2022 and is expected to be completed in late 2023, weather permitting.

Over the next three months, work on the one-kilometre duplication of Nelson Bay Road will include:

  • continuing construction of the northern retaining wall including formwork, reinforcement and concrete pouring.
  • construction of the road surface at the eastern end of the work zone.
  • topsoil stripping and earthworks
  • building the new road surface.

Regular work hours on the upgrade are between 7am to 6pm on weekdays and between 8am and 1pm on Saturday.

The project team may need to work outside the approved work hours to carry out concrete and earthwork to ensure the project is completed as efficiently as possible.

On occasion out of hours work will be completed between 7am and 10pm on weekdays and 7am and 10pm on Saturdays.
