APR 2022Moss Vale Road closure
Moss Vale Road was significantly damaged as a result of major flooding and rainfall in late February and is closed to all traffic at Barrengarry Mountain, north of Kangaroo Valley.
More informationMoss Vale Road at Cambewarra Mountain, south of Kangaroo Valley, was also significantly damaged. Escorted access for all Transport customers is available 24 hours a day. across Cambewarra Mountain.
Escort locations and times:
- To travel north to Kangaroo Valley
- Departing intersection of Moss Vale Road and Barfield Road at Cambewarra to travel into Kangaroo Valley – on the hour, i.e. 5pm, 6pm, 7pm etc.
- To travel south from Kangaroo Valley
- Departing intersection of Moss Vale Road and Walkers Lane at Cambewarra – on the half hour i.e. 5:30pm, 6:30pm, 7:30pm etc
Limited access was restored at Barrengarry Mountain just north of Kangaroo Valley on 18 March for emergency services, and school children to be able to meet their school bus. It will take up to six months to restore road access at Barrengarry Mountain. This may change as further assessments are carried out.
Detours will be in place via Hume Motorway, Picton Road and the Princes Highway. and for light vehicles can also detour via Jamberoo Mountain Road, adding up to an additional 30 minutes to travel times.
Vehicles over 10 meters, 12 tonnes, buses and vehicles towing caravans of any size will need to detour via Hume Motorway, Picton Road and M1 Princes Motorway, adding up to an additional 60-90 minutes to travel times.
Road users are advised to allow an additional travelling time, drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control. The Illawarra Highway at Macquarie pass is also currently closed to all road users due to significant damage due to the recent rainfall.
The slope issues are complex and require specialist workers to assess the damage and put together a work plan. More than a dozen state roads across the south coast have been impacted by the extreme weather event and further damage is expected over the coming weeks.
The continuing bad weather is making it difficult to finalise investigations into the extent of the damage.
It is expected to take up to two years to restore the full-length of Moss Vale Road to pre-flood condition.
We are investigating options to carry out maintenance work on Hampden Bridge while the road is closed to avoid further closures once roads re-open. We are committed to looking at options to reduce impacts on customers and the community where possible.
We will continue to keep the community updated through our dedicated stakeholder list, live traffic and electronic message boards.
New message boards have been placed on Moss Vale Road on the approach to Cambewarra to communicate details of the escort arrangements. Message boards have also been amended at Bomaderry and Berry to say Moss Vale Road is closed beyond Kangaroo Valley so people are aware they can access Kangaroo Valley.
We would like to thank members of the Kangaroo Valley Community Consultative Body who met with us to discuss the closure of Moss Vale Road.
We thank the community for their patience as we carry out this work.
