FEB 2021Consultation report

Transport for NSW has published the consultation report (PDF, 1.81Mb) for the proposed upgrade of Henry Lawson Drive, Georges Hall.

The upgrade will deliver dual southbound lanes from Beale Street to Rabaul Road. This will improve the efficiency of the only signalised intersection between Hume Highway and Milperra Road. Transport for NSW is also proposing to ban the right-turn from Henry Lawson Drive onto Rabaul Road, which will ease congestion caused by vehicles blocking the only northbound through lane.

Further enquiries can be directed to the project team via email HenryLawsonDrive@rms.nsw.gov.au.

The proposed upgrade is funded under the NSW Government’s Urban Roads Pinch Point Program. This funding is in addition to the NSW Government’s $100 million long-term commitment to upgrade Henry Lawson Drive, from Hume Highway to the M5 South Western Motorway.

Consultation report now published – Stage 1 of the $100 million Henry Lawson Drive upgrade early concept design

Transport for NSW has released a report detailing public feedback on Stage 1 of a proposed three stage, $100 million upgrade of Henry Lawson Drive. Early concept designs for stage 1 were released in February 2020 and include an upgrade of the busy Milperra Road, Newbridge Road and Henry Lawson Drive intersection, as well as the delivery of dual north and southbound lanes between Keys Parade, Milperra, and Tower Road, Georges Hall.

There were almost 80 submissions during the consultation phase and Transport for NSW responses are included in the report. View or download the consultation report (PDF, 861Kb).

Project information

Georges Hall pinch point upgrade – Transport for NSW has an ongoing program to identify congestion hotspots at intersections across Sydney. Henry Lawson Drive, between Beale Street and Rabaul Road, has been identified at contributing to traffic holdups and longer journey times for motorists. The critical stretch of road includes the only signalised intersection between Hume Highway and Milperra Road.

About 6,100 vehicles use Henry Lawson Drive through Georges Hall during weekday peak periods alone. Southbound traffic queues during busy periods can stretch from Milperra Road all the way back to Flinders Street – a distance of three kilometres. Left unaddressed, wait times for southbound motorists will more than double during the next decade.

Transport for NSW has designed an upgrade that can go into construction quickly and help reduce congestion on this busy corridor. The design includes utilising the existing eastern road shoulder between Endeavour Road and Rabaul Road to create a continuous dual southbound lane from Beale Street to Rabaul Road. It also involves prohibiting right turns from Henry Lawson Drive onto Rabaul Road. Despite only a few road users making this turn, it has been identified as adding additional congestion, as it slows or stops northbound through-traffic.

The proposed upgrade is funded under the NSW Government’s Urban Roads Pinch Point Program. This funding is in addition to the NSW Government’s $100 million long-term commitment to upgrade Henry Lawson Drive, from Hume Highway to the M5 South Western Motorway.

$100 million Henry Lawson Drive upgrade – In February 2020, Transport for NSW called for public comment on Stage 1 of a three-stage plan to upgrade the 7.5 kilometre length of Henry Lawson Drive between the M5 South Western Motorway, Milperra, and Hume Highway, Lansdowne.

There were almost 80 submissions from the public and their comments, along with Transport for NSW responses, have been published.

The upgrade will help ensure the road corridor can meet growing demand, with residential, commercial and industrial development expected to increase in the coming years.

The upgrade would be carried out in stages, with the first stage spanning from Keys Parade to just north of Tower Road.

The stage one upgrade of Henry Lawson Drive would provide more capacity for vehicles travelling through the intersection of Henry Lawson Drive, Milperra Road and Newbridge Road. It would improve efficiency along the corridor and safety for motorists and pedestrians.

Henry Lawson Drive upgrade stage 1A

The proposal would involve:

  • Providing two lanes in each direction on Henry Lawson Drive between Keys Parade to just north of Tower Road
  • Upgrading the intersection of Henry Lawson Drive, Milperra Road and Newbridge Road to provide:
    • An additional southbound lane
    • Extending the length and providing a dual right turn for motorists turning right from Milperra Road into Henry Lawson Drive
    • An upgraded left turn for motorists turning left from Newbridge Road into Henry Lawson Drive
    • Extending the length of the dual right turn lanes for motorists turning right from Henry Lawson Drive into Newbridge Road
  • Upgrading the intersection of Henry Lawson Drive and Tower Road including providing a dual right turn from Henry Lawson Drive into Tower Road
  • Widening the Auld Avenue Bridge to create two lanes in each direction.

The concept design for the project is still being developed. Detail regarding the design such as how the widening would impact the surrounding properties and land are still being developed and would be provided during the concept design have your say period.

Georges Hall pinch point upgrade

This upgrade will deliver an additional southbound lane from Endeavour Road to Rabaul Road. The existing left-only lane on the approach to Haig Avenue will be converted to a shared left/through lane. The right turn from Henry Lawson Drive (northbound) onto Rabaul Road will be banned to reduce congestion and the risk of crashes.

The work will also deliver upgraded roadway drainage, which will help reduce flooding events in the area.

We are continuing to refine the concept design for both the Henry Lawson Drive upgrade stage 1A project and to finalise the design for the Georges Hall pinch point upgrade. Your comments have helped us better understand the community's views on both projects.

Once the concept design for the Henry Lawson Drive upgrade stage 1A proposal has been finalised we will carry out the required environmental assessments and publicly display them prior to construction.

A consultation report outlining public comments on the Georges Hall project will be published soon.
