Transport for NSW has now completed the Wisemans Ferry second ramp upgrade. The ramp has been repaired and rebuilt with new asphalt, helping to ensure a safer access to the ferry for pedestrians and road users.
Thank you for your patience and understanding while we carried out this essential work.
Project information
Transport for NSW operates vehicular ferries on rivers and waterways in metropolitan Sydney and regional NSW.
The Wisemans ferry crosses the Hawkesbury River just east of the junction of the Macdonald River at the village of Wisemans Ferry.
Wisemans Ferry has two cable ferry crossings, connecting the Old Northern Road and Wisemans Ferry Road. The main crossing has a capacity of 24 vehicles each trip and the second crossing has a capacity of 18 vehicles.
Transport for NSW proposes to rehabilitate the second ramp on the relief crossing due to its poor condition.
Regular visual inspections identified the following:
- large cracks on the surface of the ramp
- numerous patch repairs
- undercutting at the end of the ramp
Site compound
We have already established a site compound in preparation for this closure. The work over the closure will include the following activities:
- replace the second ferry ramp – the new ramp will be built over the existing structure
- install underwater barriers around the ramps to reduce wear and tear from tides and sediments
- resurface the roads approach to the new ferry ramp
The plant and machinery that will be used with be a combination of electric hand tools, various generators, excavators, pumps, vibrators and tippers.
Transport for NSW would:
- replace the second ferry ramp – the new ramp will be built over the existing structure
- install underwater barriers around the ramps to reduce wear and tear from tides and sediments
- resurface the roads approach to the new ferry ramp
The project would:
- ensure a safe, reliable ferry service
- safer access to the ferry for pedestrians by widening the ramp on the northern side
- provide safe and effective pedestrian infrastructure
- support economic growth
