MAY 2020Temporary closure of Korns Crossing Bridge

Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions on Korns Crossing Bridge at Crystal Creek, about eight kilometres west of Murwillumbah.

The bridge will be closed from 4-9 May, 2020, weather permitting, while two 30m x 1.6m steel beams are installed so the current 27-tonne load limit can be removed.

Motorists will need to use an alternative route during the closure.

Motorists heading towards Murwillumbah from Numinbah should turn right onto Zara Road at Chillingham and left onto Tyalgum Road at Tyalgum.

Those heading towards Numinbah from Murwillumbah should turn right from Kyogle Road onto Tyalgum Road, then right onto Limpinwood Road at Tyalgum and left onto Numinbah Road at Chillingham.

Heavy vehicle operators are reminded they are required to use the safest alternate route and should not to use Chilcotts Road.

Work will be carried out between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Saturday, weather permitting.

Additional minor works will continue for about four weeks after the beam installation. Stoppages of up to five minutes may be experienced during this period.

Traffic control and a reduced speed limit will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience during this time.

AUG 2018

AUG 2018Site investigations and assessments

We have completed site investigations and assessments for a number of options to construct a new bridge over Crystal Creek to replace Korns Crossing Bridge.

Work carried out during development included:

  • Survey
  • Flood modelling
  • Geotechnical investigations
  • Environmental assessment
  • Heritage assessment
  • Bridge and road design.

As a result of the investigations, we are now considering options and funding opportunities and will keep the community updated.

In the meantime, we have identified the need to carry out maintenance on the bridge to ensure it continues servicing the community.

Project information

Korns Crossing Bridge is located in the village of Crystal Creek, about eight kilometres west of Murwillumbah on Numinbah Road.

The three-span Dare truss bridge, which was built in 1916, crosses the Rous River providing an important tourist link between Murwillumbah and south-east Queensland.

Under the NSW Timber Truss Strategy, Korns Crossing Bridge is to be removed and replaced with a new structure.
