SEP 2019Start of bridge piling

We are building a temporary, one-lane bridge upstream of Briner Bridge to allow traffic to cross the river while the upgrade is carried out. The temporary bridge will be 4.2m (one lane) wide and will have the same 33t load capacity as the existing Briner Bridge.

The first stage of piling, which will be required for the foundations of the temporary bridge, started on Tuesday, 17 September and will take about eight weeks to complete, weather permitting. It will then be another three to four weeks before the temporary bridge is open to traffic (around mid-December).

Project information

Briner Bridge, which was built in 1908, is a Dare truss bridge located between the villages of Ulmarra and Tucabia on Coldstream Terrace. The single span bridge crosses the Upper Coldstream River and is one of six operable Dare truss bridges and one of two single-span Dare truss bridges in NSW.

In 2012, following stakeholder and community consultation, Roads and Maritime Services finalised a strategy for the sustainable conservation of heritage timber truss bridges. It was proposed 26 of those timber truss bridges would be retained, including Briner Bridge.

To improve Briner Bridge’s longevity and reduce future maintenance costs, Transport for NSW upgraded the structure.

In developing plans to restore the bridge, Transport for NSW worked closely with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage to ensure the bridge’s heritage features were retained.
