Construction of new traffic lights at the Princes Highway and Wason Street intersection in Milton will begin Sunday 2 May 2021.

Work will be carried out at night between 7pm and 6am, Sunday to Thursday nights, from Monday 19 April to minimise impact on the Princes Highway during the day and will be completed by and is expected to take about eight weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Where possible, noisier work will be completed before 11pm to help reduce the impact on the community.

A site compound will be established at the council carpark on the corner of Church and Graham streets, with only a small section of this facility to be used by the project team to allow continued public access.

Traffic lights will provide a safer way for pedestrians to cross the highway, better connecting the town and its people to businesses and services. As part of the project, the existing zebra crossing will be removed and pedestrians will cross the highway using the traffic lights.

Safety for pedestrians and motorists will improve in Milton town centre following a new set of traffic lights being installed at the Wason Street and Princes Highway intersection.

Traffic lights will provide a safer way for pedestrians to cross the highway, better connecting the town and its people to businesses and services. As part of the project, the existing zebra crossing will be removed and pedestrians will cross the highway using the traffic lights.

Work to install the traffic lights will take place outside holiday times to minimise the impact on the community and motorists, and is expected to start after the Easter school holidays.

These safety improvements will contribute to the 20 year plan for the Princes Highway and are part of enabling better connected regional centres and growing regional economies with safer journeys for locals, visitors and freight.

Project information

When consulted as part of the Milton Ulladulla Traffic Study in 2018, the local community raised concerns about pedestrian safety and accessibility between the highway and Wason Street.

Traffic lights will provide a safer way for pedestrians to cross the highway, better connecting the town and making businesses and services easier to access.

This work is part of a 20 year plan to improve safety on the Princes Highway for all transport users and make communities more liveable. For more information on the 20 year plan, visit the Roadmap to 2024 website.

Intersection improvements will include the removal of the current zebra crossing, the installation of traffic signals, changes to the pedestrian area and ramps and line marking on the Princes Highway and Wason Street. An extended kerb will be constructed on the north eastern corner of the intersection to increase pedestrian safety.
