MAY 2022Night work on Martin Bridge
We will be carrying out limited night work as part of the repainting project. Martin Bridge will remain open to traffic throughout the work with traffic reduced to one lane.
More informationWe will be working from Sunday 29 May for two weeks, weather permitting. We will be working from Sunday to Thursday between 7pm and 5am.
See the May 2022 project notification (PDF, 186Kb) for more information.
Due to weather delays and continuing COVID-19 impacts on the work force, we are experiencing delays to completion of the repainting project. Work on Martin Bridge is now expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2022.
We thank you for your patience.
Project information
Martin Bridge is a steel truss bridge that spans the Manning River at Taree. The bridge has an overall length of 475 metres with 15 spans, 11 of which are steel trusses. The bridge was opened in 1940 and replaced a ferry service at the end of Pulteney Street, Taree.
Transport for NSW will deliver the project which includes repairing and repainting the existing steel on the bridge. The scope of work involves encapsulating each span to remove and dispose of existing paint and apply three coats of new paint. Each span will take up to two months to complete.
Martin Bridge is a significant bridge located over an important waterway. Transport has worked closely with our contractors to develop a way to deliver the work to minimise impacts on the Manning River and the local environment.
We are making sure we minimise impacts on the local community and road users by delivering the project with very limited night work and minimal short bridge closures. Work on the project started on 11 June. Due to weather delays and continuing COVID-19 impacts on the work force, we are expecting delays to completion of the repainting project. We are currently considering alternative delivery options for the remaining work and will continue to keep the community closely informed on next steps and timing for finalising the project. We thank you for your patience.
Access will be available across the bridge during most work activities. Most of the repainting work will be carried out during the day with minor disruption to motorists and pedestrians. However full bridge closures may be required for up 15 minutes on limited occasions during the night, to facilitate isolated plant or equipment movements. These will be managed to minimise traffic disruptions and avoid the need for detours. We will advise the community in advance of these short bridge closures.
Transport for NSW will continue to keep the community advised as this project progresses.
