The westbound lane on Heathcote Road, between New Illawarra Road and Princes Highway, is closed due to rock and soil slippage, causing cracking in the road pavement. The slippage is caused by the extreme wet weather and is replicated elsewhere on the Sydney road network. These sites can be dangerous when wet weather and changes in ground conditions continue.
The closure is to ensure the safety of motorists and workers who are trying to assess the damage and plan for repair of the site. Our priority is to mitigate risk to the community.
Temporary pavement restoration works will begin Friday 12 August 2022, weather permitting.
Heathcote Road will be open to traffic from 6am Sunday 14 August 2022 with reduced speed limits in place.
Location of the slip site
The slip site is located on the westbound lane of Heathcote Road, between Princes Highway and New Illawarra Road, east of the Woronora River.
Traffic changes from Friday 12 August
Heathcote Road will be closed from 8pm Friday 12 August 2022 to 6am Sunday 14 August 2022.
The detour shown on this page is currently in place for the closure. The detour is designed to give you the smoothest trip by avoiding local roads that are more easily congested.
Motorists are asked to plan ahead and allow for the increase in journey time.

There are a number of other road projects in the area including the upgrade of the Heathcote Road bridge over Woronora River. To build the road approaches to the new bridge we are excavating and widening the existing rock cutting. To undertake this work safely and minimise traffic impacts during the day there are full road closures of Heathcote Road between New Illawarra Road and Princes Highway, scheduled on weeknights and over weekends.

We will keep the community up to date on the slippage and emergency repairs via this website, social media, electronic signage and Live Traffic updates.
