JUL 2020Project update
The NSW Government provided $12.8 million to replace the Camp Street Bridge to provide a stronger, longer lasting bridge.
More informationThe new Camp Street Bridge officially opened to traffic on 27 July, delivering a wider, safer and more efficient crossing of Lake Forbes for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
The new bridge replaced the 93-year-old old bridge, and serves as a new link in the centre of Forbes, for locals, visitors and the freight industry.
The old Camp Street Bridge was built in 1927 and has a rich legacy and significance for the Forbes community and we designed a new bridge that will deliver the infrastructure Forbes needs, in a way that honours the history of Forbes.
Elements of the old bridge have been incorporated into the design of the new bridge to complement the town's heritage aesthetics.
It's the simple touches, like historic lamp posts on the bridge approaches that provide a reference to the past, with a modern twist. This bridge has a story to tell and a heritage area has been established so the community and visitors can learn about the history of Camp Street Bridge.
The NSW Government provided $12.8 million for the Camp Street Bridge replacement project, with work starting in late August 2019.
More than 2000 tonnes of concrete and 221 tonnes of steel were required to build the new 70-metre-long Camp Street Bridge, which was built from 133 precast concrete planks.
Project information
The Camp Street Bridge was built in 1927 and is now in poor condition due to age.
A new bridge is needed to meet current design standards and improve safety for motorists and pedestrians into the future.
A new bridge across Lake Forbes will improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and reduce future maintenance requirements.
The project involves building a new, wider bridge across Lake Forbes with wider travel lanes and pedestrian/cyclist paths.
The design includes landscaping suitable to the surrounding lakeside environment. The lamp posts from the existing bridge will be incorporated in the design to complement the town's heritage aesthetics.
- Improving road user safety through wider travel lanes, improved road approaches and pedestrian/cyclist paths across the new bridge
- Improving connections for pedestrians and cyclists between both sides of Lake Forbes
- Reduced ongoing maintenance costs
- Improved environmental outcomes by managing stormwater runoff from the road into Lake Forbes
- Retaining the lamp posts in the landscape design on the approach to bridge, to reference the past and link the bridge to the heritage aesthetic of the town
- Unique design to provide an iconic structure for the Forbes community for the future.
