MAY 2021Start of work

Transport for NSW sought comments from the community and stakeholders in February 2021 on the scheduling of work, bridge closures and detours that are required as part of a painting and maintenance project on Dawson River Bridge.

We would like to thank everyone who took the time to consider our proposal and provide feedback. We have reviewed the feedback and will be proceeding with the proposed work schedule, bridge closures and detours.

Stage one work will start from Monday 10 May. Occasional day work will be carried out between 7am and 5pm from Monday to Thursday, weather permitting. Occasional night work will be carried out between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday, weather permitting.

Stage two work will start from Sunday 23 May and is expected to take a minimum of two months to complete, with some full bridge closures and detours in place. Stage two of work will be carried out between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday, weather permitting. More details about the bridge closures and the detour route are included below.

Project information

The painting and maintenance work will be carried out in stages.

Stage one:

Stage one work will start from Monday 10 May. This preparation work will include establishing a site compound near the bridge and intermittent day and night work.  Occasional day work will be carried out between 7am and 5pm from Monday to Thursday, weather permitting, with limited impact to traffic. Occasional night work, with limited impact to traffic, will be carried out between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday, weather permitting.

Stage two:

Stage two work will start from Sunday 23 May and is expected to take a minimum of two months to complete, with some full bridge closures and detours in place. Work will involve preparation for the painting project, including repairs to the steel truss, replacing the overhead bracing along the full length of the bridge and bird proofing activities.

Due to high volumes of traffic on the bridge during the day, stage two of work will be carried out between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday, weather permitting.

Stage three:

The final stage of work involves painting the bridge and will commence in late-2021. This work would continue on from the initial stages of the project and is expected to be completed by mid-2022. The work hours would be consistent with the first stages of the project. Again due to high volumes of traffic on the bridge during the day, work would be carried out at night Sunday to Thursday between 7pm and 5am to minimise disruption to motorists.

We will continue to keep the community updated as this stage of the project progresses.

Some of the work to repair and replace steel bracing requires closing the bridge to traffic to ensure the safety of workers and motorists. We have developed a schedule for the bridge closures which aims to minimise inconvenience to motorists and community.

During stage two of work from Sunday 6 June, two weeks of full bridge closures with detours will be in place at night. In late-July, an additional week of full bridge closures with detours will be required. The closures will be in place from Sunday to Thursday between 10pm and 5am. We will ensure that closures of Dawson River Bridge are not scheduled at the same time as closures of Martin Bridge.

During the closures, a detour will be in place via Cundletown and the Pacific Highway as shown in the map below. Detour route – up to 20 kilometres or around 20 minutes travel time. We have procedures in place to allow access across the bridge for emergency services during the bridge closures.

The final stage of work which includes painting the bridge is expected to commence in late-2021. We will continue to keep the community informed as the project progresses.
