The NSW Government upgraded Cockatoo Island Wharf as part of the Transport Access Program. The wharf reopened on 18 August 2017.
Project information
The Cockatoo Island Wharf upgrade is part of the major progressive upgrade of ferry wharves across Sydney Harbour which aims to improve Sydney’s ferry services for customers, delivering accessible, safe, comfortable public transport infrastructure with capacity for extra ferry services. New and upgraded wharves and interchanges are being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program.
This program has already delivered new facilities at Milsons Point, Neutral Bay, Rose Bay, Balmain (Thames Street), Huntleys Point, Cremorne Point, Mosman Bay, Drummoyne, Balmain East, Sydney Olympic Park, Pyrmont Bay, Meadowbank, McMahons Point and Chiswick.
The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust (Harbour Trust) is responsible for planning and management of Cockatoo Island and is the Approval Authority for the majority of works related to the island, including the wharf upgrade.
Roads and Maritime has engaged closely with the Harbour Trust throughout the project. We have consulted with Cockatoo Island’s two key stakeholder groups; the Cockatoo Island Community Advisory Committee and Cockatoo Island Tenants Committee.
The Cockatoo Island Wharf design was developed following feedback from the community and aims to balance factors including safety, accessibility, efficient ferry operations and environmental impacts.
The new wharf incorporates a new floating pontoon, aluminium gangway and concrete bridge, connecting to the existing Bundy Office structure. The pontoon has a curved roof, new seating and glass weather screening.
The upgraded Cockatoo Island Wharf would provide:
- Protection from the wind, rain and sun
- Improved seating and waiting areas
- Improved safety for customers
- Quicker and more efficient ferry boarding and disembarking
- Improved access for mobility impaired customers and customers with prams
- Effective wayfinding signage and lighting.
