JUN 2022Night work on Cabbage Tree Road, Williamtown
To minimise the impact to motorists, we will be working at night between 6pm and 6am to complete the final road surface over seven shifts, weather permitting.
More informationWork started on Wednesday 27 April, and we expect the complete the work late-June, weather permitting. A combination of wet weather and extremely windy conditions at the end of May have caused some delays.
Regular work hours are between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Saturday. During the completion of day works through June, the current westbound detour will be removed as soon as possible.

Westbound motorists will be detoured via either Richardson Road towards Raymond Terrace or Nelson Bay Road toward Newcastle. We have included a map (PDF, 534Kb) to show the alternate routes.

Project information
The Australian and NSW Governments are jointly funding a $4 million safety upgrade between Nelson Bay Road and Barrie Close to provide a stronger, longer lasting and safer road for motorists.
Transport for NSW has engaged Port Stephens Council to carry out the work along a 2.6-kilometre section of Cabbage Tree Road which includes:
- Widening and resurfacing the road
- Providing a wider painted centreline
- Installing new safety barriers
We will be working between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Saturday and expect to complete the work in eight weeks, weather permitting.
The site compound will be established from Tuesday 19 April.
Detours for westbound motorists will be in place between 6am and 6pm from Monday to Saturday until late-June, weather permitting.
From Sunday 19 June, the westbound detour will be in place 24 hours a day for night work to complete the find road resurface. This night time detour will be in place for seven shifts and is expected to be complete by late-June, weather permitting.
Westbound motorists will be detoured via either Richardson Road towards Raymond Terrace or Nelson Bay Road toward Newcastle. Please refer to this detour map (PDF, 534Kb) which shows the alternate routes.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead as the detour is expected to add up to 18 kilometres to journeys, which is about 15 minutes travel time. Access will be maintained for local residents, local businesses, school buses and emergency services.
Eastbound traffic toward Nelson Bay Road will be under a stop/ slow traffic arrangement with a reduced speed limit of 40km/h to ensure the safety of motorists and workers.
