Anzac Bridge

Anzac Bridge precinct

The NSW Government is planning improvements for the Anzac Bridge and Western Distributor to make it easier for the growing number of road users to safely move into and around the area. This work includes installing two new gantries and variable signs using the iconic A frames as the first step in upgrading the bridge’s capacity for real time traffic management.

Work will begin in March to install fibre cables along Anzac Bridge towards Druitt Street. These cables will power the gantries and variable signs that will be installed between the existing A-frames on Anzac Bridge. The community will be notified before work to install the new gantries starts, which is expected to be mid-late 2022.

Project information

Transport for NSW are planning improvements to ensure that the Anzac Bridge continues to be a reliable and accessible connection for people moving between the west of Sydney and the Sydney CBD via the Western Distributor.

Transport for NSW is working with the Department of Veteran Affairs and the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) on the proposed improvements to the Anzac Bridge and will keep the veteran community updated. These improvements are being designed with its war memorial status in mind and Transport for NSW will proactively preserve and enhance the ability for people to remember and commemorate our service men and women as these improvements progres

Later this year, Transport for NSW will commence work on the Anzac Bridge to install two new gantries and variable signs between the existing A frames. These signs will help direct and manage traffic travelling over the bridge towards the west.

The benefits will include:

  • more reliable travel times
  • effective real time speed and lane management
  • smoother lane choices and better driver experience
  • fewer crashes and serious incidents: real time traffic management on the M4 Smart Motorway led to a 30% reduction in serious crashes after 3 months.

Transport for NSW are in the early design phase for additional gantries and road signs along the Western Distributor to assist motorists travelling east towards the CBD. We will also deliver a series of Smart Motorway upgrades along the Anzac Bridge and Western Distributor network to improve efficiency and safety on this busy corridor.

Transport for NSW will come back to the community on these additional gantries at a later date and provide an opportunity for feedback. We will continue to engage with the community as designs progress for further upgrades around the Anzac Bridge and the Western Distributor.
