Navigation warning - Coffs Harbour Marina, Coffs Harbour

(Marine Safety Act 1998 s.12)

Coffs Harbour Marina, Coffs Harbour
Monday 19 July 2021 to Tuesday 30 November 2021

Transport for NSW has contracted SMC Marine to construct the new Coffs Harbour Boat Maintenance Facility, travel lift runway and berthing facility for Government vessels at Marina Drive, Coffs Harbour. The works will commence on Monday 19 July and continue until Tuesday 30 November 2021.

During this time the western end of the harbour near the public wharf will be closed to all vessels and the public. A silt curtain depicted in the image below, will be installed for the duration of the works. The silt curtain serves as an in-water barrier and will make this portion of the harbour inaccessible to all unauthorised vessels. The silt curtain will be marked with yellow special marker buoys at 30 metre intervals with flashing lights at night.

The site boundary coordinates are marked by the ends of the silt curtain.

  • North Corner: 30.302550 S / 153.14288 0 E
  • South Corner: 30.303470 S / 153.144160 E

An 18 metre modular barge will be anchored within the construction zone and diving operations will be undertaken intermittently.

The works involve the removal of existing floating structures and piles, dredging, and removal of dredged material, installation of marine piles, construction of travel lift runway beams and the installation of an access pontoon and gangway.

The works are within an existing no wash zone with a four knot speed limit which must be adhered to. Vessel operators are advised to exercise extreme caution when navigating in the vicinity of the works, to minimise wash and to travel at a speed of 4 knots or less when within 100 metres of the works barge or work vessels and be vigilant to maintain a close watch for the curtain and marker buoys to ensure that vessel props do not get fouled in the curtain or the buoys.

This navigation warning remains in place for the duration of the works.

Transport for NSW advises that in relation to the works;

  1. Persons within the vicinity of the works must comply with any directions given by any Boating Safety Officer or Police Officer in relation to the works or to marine safety. Failure to comply with any such direction is an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.15A - Maximum Penalty $3,300.00).
  2. Vessels are required to maintain a safe distance and speed from the works and operators are reminded that the production of wash which impacts unreasonably on the works is an offence (Marine Safety Regulation 2016 – clause 11(2)) - Maximum Penalty $5,500.00)
