Major traffic changes on Princes Highway at Nowra

3 December 2020

Member for Kiama Gareth Ward MP and Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock MP are today advising local motorists of changed traffic conditions coming up on our Princes Highway while work is carried out on the Nowra Bridge project.

Mr Ward said that all traffic between Bolong Road and Mattes Way will shift to the east and traffic lights will be installed from next Thursday 10th December, weather permitting.

"This change will create a safe work area to the west and allow us to begin widening the highway to provide long-term traffic flow improvements," he said.

"This is an important stepping stone for a $342 million project which will employ more than 200 people at its peak with 69 per cent of current workers living locally, providing an economic boost for the area during these difficult times.

"There will be some permanent changes at the Bolong Road and Princes Highway intersection as part of the traffic shift, with the acceleration lane for vehicles turning right onto the Princes Highway from Bolong Road to be permanently removed.

"The traffic lights will be installed to intermittently stop northbound highway traffic and allow vehicles to safely turn right out of Bolong Road.

"There will also be a temporary closure of the northbound and southbound fast lanes on the Princes Highway between Bolong Road and Illaroo Road from 5pm Saturday 12th December to 11am Sunday 13th December, weather permitting," Mr Ward said.

Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock MP said that this section of road will be reduced to one lane in each direction during this time and a reduced speed of 40km/h will be in place.

"These changed traffic conditions will be in place while concrete is poured in the median of the Bomaderry Creek Bridge to allow the new concrete to gain strength by reducing vehicle vibrations near the work," she said.

"The closures will occur on the weekend when traffic volumes are lower but Transport for NSW anticipates traffic delays of up to 15 minutes and thanks motorists in advance for their cooperation.

"Electronic message signs will be in place before and during these changes to advertise traffic changes and reduced speed limits in advance.

"Night work is continuing across the project and will be carried out up to Thursday 17th December on sections of the Princes Highway, Scenic Drive and Bolong, Illaroo and Bridge roads.

"All work will shut down over the Christmas period from 6pm Friday 18th December until 7am Monday 4th January 2021," Mrs Hancock said.

"There will be no work carried out during this time but the reduced work zone speed limit of 60 km/h will continue to be enforced.

"Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and to please follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

"I would like to thank motorists and the local community for its patience while this work is being carried out," Mrs Hancock concluded.
