Planning under way for Pacific Highway interchange and Ewingsdale Road

10 March 2020

Transport for NSW is working on solutions to address traffic congestion and safety on the Pacific Highway at the Ewingsdale interchange.

Director North Region Anna Zycki said Transport for NSW acknowledges there are ongoing issues with traffic congestion on the Pacific Highway at the interchange, particularly during the morning peak.

“We understand this is frustrating for motorists and continue to take seriously the concerns and safety of residents, visitors and Byron Shire Council about the highway interchange,” Ms Zycki said.

“The NSW Government is committed to improving journeys for all road users. Transport for NSW recently implemented a trial at the roundabout near Byron Bay Hospital to improve traffic flow near the interchange.

“The changes, which are part of a trial, involved removing right turns from the hospital and U-turns from the east to help improve traffic flow.”

This trial follows earlier lane adjustments to provide more capacity for vehicles on the highway off-ramp and an extension of the merge onto Ewingsdale Road. While there have been some benefits to traffic flow, they have not been significant enough to solve the issues.

Ms Zycki said a further $200,000 has been committed towards ongoing planning and investigations.

“As part of a staged approach to manage congestion, Transport for NSW is continuing to investigate other options to improve traffic flows,” she said.

“It’s clear the performance of Ewingsdale Road is a key factor. While this road is the responsibility of Byron Shire Council, we’re dealing with an inter-connected network with complex issues.

“That’s why we are committed to working with Council to take a holistic view of the wider Byron road network, and looking to find sustainable transport solutions that fit into that broader context.

“We remain focused on working with Council to find longer term solutions to the issues at both the Ewingsdale interchange on the Pacific Highway and Ewingsdale Road.”
