New and extended clearways on Canterbury and Milperra roads

2 December 2019

Motorists are close to enjoying smoother and more reliable journeys on Milperra and Canterbury roads with new and extended clearways to be installed this month.

Transport for NSW Executive Director Sydney, John Hardwick, said the clearways will be operational from Monday 16 December in both directions from Henry Lawson Drive at Milperra to New Canterbury Road at Hurlstone Park.

“The clearways will help reduce daily travel times for around 59,000 vehicles along Milperra Road and 47,000 vehicles on Canterbury Road,” Mr Hardwick said.

“Stretching from Milperra to Hurlstone Park, the clearways will help tackle congestion through the suburbs of Punchbowl, Campsie and Canterbury."

“The clearways will be operational from 6am to 7pm on weekdays and from 9am to 6pm on weekends and public holidays, making an additional lane available to traffic during these times.”

Mr Hardwick thanked the community, Canterbury Bankstown Council, businesses and stakeholders who had their say on the proposal.

“Clearways help manage congestion on these busy corridors where the road is close to capacity and parking disrupts the flow of traffic,” Mr Hardwick said.

“To support local business customers at the Canterbury Town Centre, road users can continue to park on Milperra and Canterbury roads after 7pm on weekdays and 6pm on weekends and public holidays."

“Transport for NSW will continue to work with Canterbury Bankstown Council to progress alternative short-term parking options for business customers of the Canterbury shopping strip.”

The alternative business customer parking (subject to council approval) includes five one-hour spaces on Jeffrey Street, four one-hour spaces on Minter Street and five one-hour spaces on Floss Street.

The clearways program is delivering more consistent driving conditions across many of Sydney’s busiest roads, including the recent installation of clearways nearby along Bexley, Punchbowl, King Georges and Fairford roads and Stacey Street.
