Crews dig in to deliver Mona Vale Road East upgrade
22 October 2019
The upgrade of Mona Vale Road between Manor Road and Foley Street is progressing well, with major earthwork now being carried out.
Transport for NSW Executive Director Sydney John Hardwick said once complete, the NSW Government's $140 million upgrade will improve traffic flow, access and safety along Mona Vale Road.
"Around 35,000 vehicles use Mona Vale Road each day, providing direct access to Pittwater and Barrenjoey roads at Mona Vale," Mr Hardwick said.
"The busy section of road also acts a as gateway to the Northern Beaches coastline so it's great to see work is driving ahead.
"Work started earlier this year to clear vegetation and remove unexpected contaminated material from the area ahead of major earthwork starting."
Mr Hardwick said work is also being carried out to progressively install fauna fencing as road work continues along the upgrade corridor.
"This fencing will aim to minimise the likelihood of fauna crossing Mona Vale Road while the upgrade is carried out," Mr Hardwick said.
"As part of the upgrade, two permanent fauna crossings will be built after all major work is completed."
Mr Hardwick said as work ramps up on the upgrade, the community should expect to see more heavy vehicles in the area as they remove rock material.
"Crews have now started major excavation and rock breaking through the steep and rocky terrain, which is not an easy job," Mr Hardwick said.
"This upgrade is a mammoth task, with more than 210,000 cubic metres of material to be removed.
"While a majority of the excavated material will be taken off site, around 80,000 cubic metres of this material will be reused at the Mona Vale Road West upgrade site to prepare for future road widening."
Mr Hardwick said the upgrade is expected to be completed in 2022, weather permitting.
"Once complete, motorists will be able to travel along four lanes between Manor Road and Foley Street which will improve travel times and ease congestion," Mr Hardwick said.
"The community and motorists are thanked for their continued patience and will continue to be kept informed as the project progresses."
