Work continues on $1.6 million maintenance project for Spit Bridge

21 December

Work will resume on the $1.6 million essential maintenance project for the Spit Bridge at Mosman on Monday 9 January.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said work is nearing completion on the northern end of the bridge which includes installing scaffolding, rehabilitating the concrete shared path, removing corrosive products and applying new coating to bridge parts.

“The Spit Bridge was built in 1958 and provides an essential crossing of Middle Harbour for Northern Beaches residents,” the spokesperson said.

“About 70,000 motorists and 60,000 bus commuters use the bridge daily.

“Night work will occur from 10pm to 4.30am between Sunday and Friday, with day work from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and from 8am to 12pm on Saturdays. From March, Saturday day work hours will be from 8am to 1pm, weather permitting.

“Work was expected to be completed in early 2017, but due to delays caused by wet weather and additional areas of the bridge needing repair, the work is now expected to be finished at the end of May.

“Minimal traffic impacts are expected as most of the work will be carried out beneath the bridge from scaffolding.

“There will be no changes to bridge opening times as there will be no work on the lifting mechanism of the bridge.

“Temporary closures to some areas of the waterway may be required and boaters will be kept informed of planned closures and alternate open channels.”
