Work will start this month to install two electronic message signs to help motorists make informed decisions about their journeys along Heathcote Road at Lucas Heights.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the two permanent signs would be funded as part of the NSW Government’s $300 million Urban Roads Pinch Points program, which aims to reduce congestion and improve travel times on Sydney’s major road corridors.

“Roads and Maritime will be installing two electronic message signs on Heathcote Road at Lucas Heights after consulting the community on the proposal earlier this year,” the spokesperson said.

“An electronic message sign will be installed 375 metres north of the intersection with New Illawarra Road to provide eastbound road users with advance warning of traffic conditions on the Princes Highway.

“The second sign will be installed 235 metres south of the intersection to provide westbound motorists with travel information for the M5 Motorway.

“Roads and Maritime is installing electronic message signs before key journey decision points to provide real-time updates to road users.

This allows motorists to make more informed decisions about their route and can improve travel time by giving them the right information at the right point on the network so they can avoid delays.

“Work will be carried during 36 shifts from 7am to 5pm and 9pm to 5am between Wednesday 21 December and Tuesday 10 January, weather permitting.”

No work will be carried out between Wednesday 21 December and Tuesday 10 January to minimise the impact on road users travelling during the holiday break.

Changed traffic conditions will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists including lane closures.

Road users should follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs and allow extra travel time.
