New clearways will be installed on the Cumberland Highway to improve traffic flow along the key corridor in western Sydney between Constitution Hill and Liverpool.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the clearways are being installed as part of the $121 million Clearways Program, which aims to reduce delays and congestion by maximising use of existing road space.

“The Cumberland Highway is a major freight and transport corridor and forms part of the A28 route through greater western Sydney,” the spokesperson said.

With up to 3400 vehicles using the road every hour during peak times, No Stopping and No Parking restrictions are already in place along most of the corridor.

Installing north and southbound clearways improves congestion management as it gives authorities the ability to tow parked cars blocking traffic.

“These new clearways, each about 16 kilometres long, mean the NSW Government has now delivered more than 152 kilometres of new and extended clearways since the end of 2013.”

The clearway will be in effect from Monday 12 December between 6am and 7pm on weekdays and between 8am and 8pm on weekends.

Work will be carried out to install clearway signage until Sunday 11 December, weather permitting.

Motorists are reminded not to stop or park on a section of road when a clearway is in effect.

Parked vehicles can be reported to the Transport Management Centre on 131 700.
