Work has been completed on essential maintenance for Gasworks Bridge across Parramatta River in Parramatta.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the NSW Government funded the $1 million project to replace and repair sandstone blocks along the 110 metre bridge.

“Gasworks Bridges forms part of Macarthur Street and was built more in 1885,” the spokesperson said.

“The heritage structure was technically sophisticated for its time and is an attractive reminder of years gone by.

“Work started in March to replace and repair sections of sandstone as well as clean and test the bridge.

“This was expected to take until December however has been completed one month ahead of schedule.

“This is a great outcome for the local community which will continue to use the structure for years to come.”

Work is continuing on a separate maintenance project on the bridge to replace the wooden footpath and is expected to be completed by Monday 12 December, weather permitting.

Work hours will continue to be from 7am to 6pm and 8pm to 5am with changed traffic conditions for the safety of workers and motorists.

Lane closures may be in place and road users should follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs.
