Roads and Maritime Services is inviting the community to have a say on the Williams River erosion study report before comments close on Sunday 20 November.

A Roads and Maritime spokesperson said the study into river erosion recommends implementing land and water based erosion management measures to ensure a successful, long-term outcome for the Williams River.

“Riverbank erosion has been a key issue identified on a number of waterway systems across the state during Transport for NSW’s consultation on its Regional Boating Plans for NSW,” the spokesperson said.

“Transport for NSW developed a state-wide framework for the management of on water activities to ensure riverbanks are managed consistently and maintained for future users. This approach includes a focus on the scientific assessment of the causes of erosion and thorough consideration of all potential management options.

“This technical report, titled Riverbank Vulnerability Assessment using a Decision Support System: Seaham Weir Pool and Lower Williams River, contributes to the overall approach.

“The report was jointly commissioned by Transport for NSW and Hunter Water Corporation, with the University of New South Wales’ Water Research Laboratory conducting the research across a 12 month period.

“The report identifies factors including boating activities, poor land management practices and flooding to have degraded the condition of the riverbanks along the Williams River study area.”

The Roads and Maritime spokesperson also said the report provides a variety of options at sites considered vulnerable to erosion and recommends remedial riverbank work and temporary boating restrictions are implemented to prevent further erosion in sensitive areas.

“Community members and stakeholders are invited to comment on the report so the best combination of actions can be identified to balance the needs of river users and the river.”
