Motorists are advised work will be carried out on the Swan Hill Bridge in preparation for heavier loads expected during peak harvest season.

Roads and Maritime Services Spokesperson said the NSW and Victorian governments allocated $1.8 million for essential maintenance work to improve safety on the heritage listed timber truss bridge across the Murray River.

“There has been a gradual increase in traffic along Swan Hill Bridge as it is a common access point for motorists crossing the Murray River.

“This has prompted Roads and Maritime Services to review the current road capabilities and identify areas for safety improvement.

“The work aims to enhance the longevity of the bridge by increasing its durability, with every effort to minimise impact on motorists during the work,” the Spokesperson said.

Initial work will start today and include two shifts of night work between 10pm and 6am. A 20km/h speed limit will be in place and traffic control will be on site to direct motorists and pedestrians. Motorists can expect 10 minute delays with any work that may result in longer delays carried out after midnight when traffic impact is reduced.

Next steps will include building a temporary support structure and tree removal to improve visibility with work to continue until 14 October 2016, weather permitting.

To install the temporary support bridge closures will be required Monday to Thursday nights from 11pm to 6am between 5 September and 14 October. One Sunday closure is required on 11 September between 5am and 6pm. The bridge will be open to traffic and functioning as usual at all other times.

During the work pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained, the existing 3.1 metre width restriction will also remain in place.

Additional maintenance is also planned for 2017, at the completion of the harvest season a more permanent support solution will be installed and return the bridge to its normal minimum width of 4.3m.

Roads and Maritime, in conjunction with VicRoads, is continuing to develop permanent repair work to keep the bridge in safe operating condition. The bridge will continue to be monitored and maintained as required.
