Lansdowne Bridge to close permanently until new bridge is built

2 August 2016

Roads and Maritime Services advises motorists Lansdowne Bridge will be closed permanently until a new replacement bridge is built.

Engineers recently assessed the bridge and it was determined repair costs and ongoing maintenance were not viable options.

A decision has been made to close the bridge which supports its planned removal to make way for a new concrete bridge.

The time frame for the new bridge will be influenced by the approval process to allow work to start.

Investigations into a modern replacement bridge are continuing in consultation with Goulburn Mulwaree Council.

Roads and Maritime is working with the Office of Environment and Heritage to finalise their additional requirements around environmental studies and heritage investigation work to gain design approval for the new bridge.

The approaches to the new bridge remain the responsibility of council.

Around 2,000 vehicles use the bridge each day, including around 150 heavy vehicles.

Detours will remain in place during the closure which will add around three minutes to journey times.

Light and heavy vehicles travelling from Windemalla or Bungonia can use Brisbane Grove and Braidwood roads to access Goulburn.

Light vehicles can also use Forbes Street and Park Road to access the town centre.

The community will be kept informed as the project progresses.
