Community invited to have a final say on the final stage of the Northern Road upgrade

22 July 2016

The community is invited to have a say on the final stage of the $1.6 billion The Northern Road upgrade between Eaton Road and Littlefields Road at Luddenham with the preliminary design and access strategy now on display.

The Northern Road upgrade is a key project in the Australian and NSW government’s $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan to provide essential road improvements for one of Australia’s fastest growing regions before the planned western Sydney airport opens in the mid-2020s.

“Work is moving ahead on the final stage of this project which includes a 16 kilometre upgrade to a four lane divided road between Mersey Road and Glenmore Parkway,” a Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said.

“The community is invited to have a say on the key features of this section by Wednesday 17 August. The upgrade includes a new four way traffic light intersection to connect the realigned The Northern Road with Elizabeth Drive and the existing The Northern Road and a future connection to the proposed M12 Motorway.

“The upgrade will provide significant benefits for the local community including increased capacity to cater for future growth in the area, an improved transport corridor between Penrith and the M4 Motorway and the planned airport, improved facilities to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists and better public transport with the inclusion of new bus lanes.

“We are proposing access changes to Gates Road and Littlefields Road, after consideration was given to community feedback requesting fewer traffic light intersections along The Northern Road.

“Roads and Maritime has listened to the community and after a design review is proposing to change access into Gates Road from The Northern Road to left turn in only. A new road connection between the proposed eastern extension of Littlefields Road and Gates Road would also be built.”

Comments can be provided until Wednesday 17 August via email wsip@rms.nsw.gov.au, mail to The Northern Road Upgrade Mersey Road to Glenmore Parkway, Roads and Maritime Services PO BOX 973 Parramatta NSW 2124 or phone 1800 703 457

All feedback will be considered in further project development. The Environmental Impact Statement for The Northern Road Upgrade between Mersey Road and Glenmore Parkway is expected to be displayed for public consultation later this year.
