Further community feedback is being sought on a proposal to upgrade the Cumberland Highway intersections with Cabramatta Road and Links Avenue at Cabramatta.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the NSW Government would fund the upgrade through the $246 million Pinch Point program which will improve travel times and manage congestion along this major road corridor.

“The Cumberland Highway carries more than 44,000 vehicles on average daily and provides a key north-south connection for heavy vehicles across western Sydney, linking the M4 Motorway and Hume Highway,” the spokesperson said.

“At the start of this year feedback was sought on a proposal to extend the third northbound lane on the Cumberland Highway from Cabramatta Road to the Cabramatta Creek bridge and extending the Cumberland Highway southbound and northbound right turn bays at Cabramatta Road.

“The project also includes extending the westbound right turn lane and duplicating the eastbound right turn bay on Cabramatta Road, as well as changing the eastbound left slip lane on Cabramatta Road into a through and left turn lane.

“The traffic light phasing at both intersections would be changed to improve traffic flow efficiency.

“Additional improvements have been identified during the detailed design phase. These include:

• Adding a pedestrian signal to allow people to safely cross Links Avenue on the eastern side of the Cumberland Highway and
• Removing the ‘left turn on red permitted after stopping’ provision to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.

“The existing merge point south of the intersection with Cabramatta Road would also be relocated to south of the bridge over Cabramatta Creek to further improve safety.

“Roads and Maritime Services plans to carry out the work for up to five nights per week for six months or two nights per week for 20 months with work hours from 8pm to 5am, weather permitting.”

Community feedback on the design changes and night work schedule is being sought by Friday 8 July.

A community consultation report will be prepared to summarise feedback on the night work schedule and project design and will be available to view on Roads and Maritime’s website later this year.
