Safety improvements start on Medcalf Street and Ruswell Avenue at Warners Bay
14 JUNE 2016
Roads and Maritime Services will start work today to improve safety at the intersection of Medcalf Street and Ruswell Avenue at Warners Bay.
A Roads and Maritime spokesperson said the NSW Government is funding $150,000 to reconfigure the intersection to provide a safer right hand turning lane on Medcalf Street for vehicles turning into Ruswell Avenue.
“In the five years to December last year there were six crashes which resulted in two injuries within a 50 metre radius of the intersection, most involving turning vehicles,” the spokesperson said.
“Safety improvement work involves introducing left turn only access from Ruswell Avenue onto Medcalf Street due to poor sight distance and removing right turn access from Medcalf Street into Maurie Avenue to improve turning arrangements.
“A concrete island and painted median will be installed to clearly define travel lanes through the intersection and ‘no parking’ zones will be installed to allow for the new right hand turning lane.
“Improvements will also include changes to the location of the speed hump on Ruswell Avenue, the bus stop north of Albert Street and the stop line on Maurie Avenue.”
Roads and Maritime thanks the community for providing feedback on the proposal in November last year and has considered comments received from the community to finalise the design.
The upgrade is scheduled to start on Tuesday 14 June and is expected to be completed in two weeks, weather permitting,” the Roads and Maritime spokerson said.
This work will be carried out during the week between 9am and 2pm.
During the work changed traffic conditions including a temporary 40 km/h speed limit, lane closures and traffic diversions will be in place to ensure the safety of workers and motorists.
