Motorists are already benefiting from a $1.1 million upgrade of a section of the Mid Western Highway, west of Cowra.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the NSW Government funded $1.1 million for the first stage of a three stage upgrade of the highway to improve road surface and drainage.

“About 1150 vehicles travel along this section of the highway each day and around 10 per cent of this traffic is heavy vehicles,” the spokesperson said.

“In this first stage of the upgrade, around 2.5 kilometres of the road surface has been strengthened, patched or replaced making it better equipped to handle large amounts of water, preventing pooling and other potential hazards for motorists.

“Entries to houses along the road have also been sealed and vegetation removed to provide motorists with better visibility and a safer journey.

“Cowra Shire Council carried out the work, which started in January this year, on behalf of Roads and Maritime Services.

“The second and third stages of work on this project will involve strengthening the remaining sections between 13 and 19 kilometres west of Cowra and are expected to complete in 2018.

“The upgrade will ensure ongoing maintenance costs are reduced and motorists are provided with a safer road.

“Roads and Maritime thanks motorists and the community for their patience during this important road upgrade work.”
