Work has started on an $820,000 project to improve the intersection of Botany and Bunnerong roads in Matraville.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the work would be funded through the Pinch Point program, which aims to reduce delays, manage congestion and improve travel times on Sydney’s major roads during peak times.

“Botany and Bunnerong roads are key arterials connecting eastern suburbs such as Botany, Maroubra, Matraville and Alexandria to the Sydney CBD and Sydney Airport, facilitating major industry and local traffic,” the spokesperson said.

“Following extensive community consultation traffic lights and in road sensors will be installed at the intersection to improve safety and manage traffic flow.

“An additional right turn lane from Botany Road into Bunnerong Road and an additional westbound through lane on Bunnerong Road also aims to improve traffic capacity.

“A CCTV camera will be installed to monitor traffic conditions and two Live Traffic webcams will be installed so road users can have real time access to traffic information.

“Pedestrian safety will also be improved with a footpath to be built between Moorina Avenue and Botany Road and pedestrian crossings and kerb ramps at the traffic lights on the northern and western side of the intersection.”

Work will be completed in two stages, with the first taking six shifts before Monday 6 June, weather permitting. Roads and Maritime Services will keep the community informed of work dates for the second stage.

Work hours will be from 7am to 5pm and 9pm to 5am on weekdays.

Changed traffic conditions will be in place including lane closures and reduced speed limits.
