The upgrade of the New England Highway near the Maitland Railway Station roundabout on Church Street is progressing well with the final concrete poured last week for the bridge deck of the new eastbound overpass.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the NSW Government allocated $51 million to improve safety and traffic flow on the New England Highway at Maitland, including $45 million through the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund.

“The new eastbound overpass will carry two lanes of traffic above the roundabout on Church Street and bypass the flood plain in this area.” The spokesperson said.

“The overpass is now taking shape with the final concrete deck poured last week.

“With the final concrete pour now finished, other work can now be carried out to help finish the overpass including the installation of bridge parapets and street lighting, asphalting the road surface as well as completing the road approaches at either end of the bridge.

“The project is expected to be opened to traffic in the second half of 2016, weather permitting.

“Roads and Maritime will continue to keep the community informed of future work times, dates and any required road closures as work continues on this important project.”
