Roads and Maritime Services will start safety improvement work next Monday 2 May on the Pacific Highway at Minimbah.

A Roads and Maritime spokesperson said the Australian Government had provided $960,000 through the Black Spot programme to improve safety for motorists and reduce off road crashes.

“In the five years to June 2013 there were 14 crashes on the southbound carriageway of the Pacific Highway between one kilometre south and one kilometre north of Crockers Road, including three injury crashes. Most crashes involved motorists veering off the road,” the spokesperson said.

“This work involves installing 480 metres of wire rope safety barrier along the median of the southbound carriageway between 200 metres south and 300 metres north of Crockers Road to reduce the severity of crashes if vehicles lose control and veer off the road.

“Work also includes resurfacing around 500 metres of the highway southbound and improving the shape of the curve to provide a safer road surface by increasing the skid resistance.”

This work will be carried out between during the week between 7am and 5pm and is expected to take three weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Roads and Maritime will advise the community if any work is required outside these dates and times.

To ensure the safety of workers, pedestrians and motorists during work hours a temporary 40km/h reduced speed limit and lane closures with stop/slow traffic control will be in place.
