Work will start in May on a $150,000 project to improve safety at the intersection of Lilyfield Road and Mary Street in Lilyfield.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the project was being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s Walking Communities Program, which aims to improve safety for road users and pedestrians.

“The intersection of Lilyfield Road and Mary Street already has traffic lights and pedestrian access on the northern, southern and eastern sides,” the spokesperson said.

“However many local residents who live north of City West Link and use the North Leichhardt light rail station or Leichhardt Oval want to cross the western approach to the intersection.

“Following community support during the consultation process, work will start in May to install a pedestrian crossing on the western side of the intersection.

“The kerb ramps will be upgraded and new traffic lights installed on the northwest and southwest corners of the intersection to support pedestrian access.

“Line marking and repositioning of existing traffic lights will also be carried out.

“The work will take six shifts to complete between Monday 9 May and Monday 6 June, weather permitting, with work hours from 7am to 5pm and 9pm to 5am where required.

“Changed traffic conditions will be in place during work for the safety of road users and workers including reduced speed limits and lane closures.

“Motorists should follow the direction of traffic control and allow extra travel time.”
