Major work has started on the Marsh Street widening project at Arncliffe to reduce congestion and cater for future traffic demand.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the project is being delivered by the NSW Government to improve travel times around the Sydney Airport precinct.

“Sydney Airport is one of the city’s most important transport hubs with more than 38 million passengers annually,” the spokesperson said.

“The road network has to cater for motorists picking up and dropping off passengers as well as freight vehicles, taxis and motorists travelling through the area to Sydney CBD.

“The NSW Government and Sydney Airport are investing $500 million into road upgrades to help improve travel times and ease congestion.

“More than 56,000 motorists use Marsh Street daily including more than 27,000 travelling west. Widening the road to include a third westbound lane will remove a significant pinch point for road users.

“The new lane will extend from the Giovanni Brunetti Bridge to the M5 interchange and all road lanes will be widened to provide a safer journey for road users.

“Ventia Boral Amey Joint Venture is delivering the project which is expected to be completed by mid next year, weather permitting.

“Early work including vegetation trimming and site establishment has been under way since late February with work activity expected to increase in coming weeks.

“Motorists are asked to be patient while this essential upgrade is completed. All road users should allow extra travel time and follow the direction of traffic control.

“Extra measures to help reduce impacts on travel times will be in place including setting up electronic variable message signs throughout the local area to update and advise motorists of work.

“Where possible, work is being carried out next to the existing road to minimise traffic impacts and staged to minimise the number of traffic lane switches required.”
