Safety will be improved for students and pedestrians at two North Wollongong schools in time for the start of the second school term with the school zone speed limit extended onto the Princes Highway.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the school zone for both Wollongong High School of Performing Arts and Keira High School will be extended on to the Princes Highway from 100 metres north of Lysaght Street to 100 metres south of Lysaght Street.

“A speed zone review was carried out on the Princes Highway in response to feedback from the community, Wollongong Council, teachers, students and residents,” the spokesperson said.

“The review supported the extension of the 40 km/h school zone as it highlighted the number of students crossing the highway during school zone times.

“The new school zone will come into effect on the first gazetted school day after the April school holidays, on 26 April.”

Traffic changes will be in place for three nights from this Sunday to prepare for the change, with new line markings and extra signs installed.

Motorists are advised lane closures, traffic control and a reduced 40 km/h speed limit will be in place between 9pm and 5am from Sunday 10 to Tuesday 12 April.

“Motorists are advised school zones are in force on all gazetted school days between 8am and 9.30am each morning and 2.30pm and 4pm each afternoon,” the Roads and Maritime spokesperson said.

Motorists should ensure they slow down and drive to the conditions for the safety of all students and pedestrians.

Members of the community can sign up at the Safer Roads NSW website to receive updates about changes to permanent speed limits in their nominated area and to have a say on speed limits.
