Have your say on Goonoo Goonoo Rd concept design

The public can help shape plans for a future upgrade of Tamworth’s Goonoo Goonoo Road (New England Highway), with the concept design now available for community feedback.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the NSW Government has committed $3 million to plan for the duplication of the section of Goonoo Goonoo Road between Jack Smyth Drive and Calala Lane.

“Goonoo Goonoo Road is an important part of the Tamworth road network that serves as a gateway to the city’s entertainment and equestrian precinct, and as a vital link between the city and surrounding towns and villages,” Mr Toole said.

“The proposed upgrade would deliver safer journeys along the busy highway, and with more than 20,000 vehicles using this section of road each day, remove a major pinch point from Tamworth’s urban area.”

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said Transport for NSW and Tamworth Regional Council have carried out investigations on Goonoo Goonoo Road over the past two years, including traffic modelling.

“We know there’s growing congestion on this section of road – and these improvements are about addressing that and making journeys along this key route safer and more efficient and supporting the growth of our city,” Mr Anderson said.

‘It’s just one of the ways we’re investing in a road transport network that facilitates better trips for locals and improved regional connectivity.”

As part of the proposed duplication, the concept design includes a set of traffic signals at the intersection of Goonoo Goonoo Road and Calala Lane, a roundabout at the intersection of Goonoo Goonoo Road and Craigends Lane, and intersection improvements for The Ringers Road and Greg Norman Drive.

There will be a central median to separate oncoming traffic under the proposal, along with a continuous pedestrian and cycle path along the western side of the highway.

At this stage, the NSW Government is funding planning investigations, with funding and timing for construction yet to be confirmed.

The concept design is available online at: nswroads.work/ggroad and feedback can be submitted by 31 March 2021 through the website; via email to region.north@transport.nsw.gov.au; or by post to Goonoo Goonoo Road Project Team, Transport for NSW, PO Box 576, Grafton NSW 2460.

Members of the project team will also be available by appointment to meet with individuals face-to-face to listen to their concerns and feedback on Wednesday, 17 and Tuesday, 23 March. To arrange a meeting, please call 1800 653 092.
