Upgrade work to start on John Renshaw drive
Safer journeys are on the way for motorists using John Renshaw Drive, with work to widen and resurface the road about to start at Buchanan.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the upgrade was being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s $12.4 million commitment over three years to improve safety, reduce crashes and upgrade the road surface along a 10-kilometre section of the road between the M1 Pacific Motorway and Hunter Expressway.
“These upgrades that started last year are already providing smoother and safer journeys for the 12,000 motorists who use John Renshaw Drive each day, and work on the remaining section starting next week will deliver even greater dividends for locals,” Mr Toole said.
“This latest stage of the project involves widening and resurfacing sections of the road between Lings Road and the Hunter Expressway, as well as installing a wide painted centre line and rumble strips on the centre and sides of the road.
“This work will not only deliver safer journeys, but will also support 50 local jobs and provide work for 11 suppliers and contractors.”
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said similar upgrades had already proven successful in driving down the number of accidents on other regional roads.
“Installing a wide centre line improves safety by providing greater distance for drivers to recover if crossing into the opposing traffic lane,” Mr Martin said.
“Rumble strips alert drivers when they are drifting out of their lane, either off the road or even worse, into oncoming traffic.
“These measures have been shown to reduce fatalities and injuries caused by headon crashes by up to 65 per cent.”
Transport for NSW has engaged Cessnock City Council to deliver the work, which is scheduled to start on Wednesday, 17 March and take 12 months to complete, weather permitting.
To reduce impact to motorists, work will be carried out between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday with lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h during work hours, with occasional work between 7am and 5pm from Monday to Friday.
