Safety comes first for those travelling between Lithgow and Bathurst
7 December 2020
Road users will be able to enjoy a safer and more reliable journey on the Great Western Highway between Lithgow and Bathurst following the completion of $1 million in safety upgrades at Walang.
Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said about 8500 vehicles use this section of the Great Western Highway every day so these improvements will play a part in keeping motorists safe on regional roads.
"We also know Lithgow and Bathurst are fast becoming hugely popular tourist destinations, so this work will help ensure all those visiting the Central West region return home safely," Mr Toole said.
"A number of factors were considered to determine the most appropriate safety measures to adopt, including crash statistics and highway usage.
"Work included widening the road shoulder, installing safety barriers on the edge line in both directions, relocating road signs, and repainting road markings to provide a safer road environment.
"This project was delivered as part of the Saving Lives on Country Roads program and supported 30 jobs, including some local Bathurst and Lithgow businesses."
Transport for NSW thanks road users for their patience while the improvement work was carried out.
