Vehicle-activated, solar powered signs are making trips safer for motorists along one of the most popular tourist routes in the Oberon and Blue Mountains area.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the $400,000 project, completed under the NSW Government’s Safer Roads program, will alert drivers to the narrow, steep and winding conditions along 7.4 kilometres of Jenolan Caves Road between Hartley and Good Forest.

“This section of Jenolan Caves Road between the Great Western Highway at Hartley and Duckmaloi Road at Hampton has a lot of curves and bends which have resulted in numerous crashes over the years,” Mr Toole said.

“While there were some existing safety features through this section, including safety barriers and curve alignment markers on some curves, this new signage will alert drivers to the conditions ahead to slow down and take extra care.”

The new safety measures include five solar powered signs which are activated on approach travelling between Hartley and Good Forest as well as multiple markers on 15 corners to highlight and draw attention to upcoming curves.

“The Jenolan Caves attract many visitors to the region and this additional signage will help to keep both locals tourists and locals safe along this scenic route,” Mr Toole said.
