Motorists are enjoying safer journeys on the Castlereagh Highway at Capertee, north of Lithgow, with work to widen road shoulders and install safety barriers now complete.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the $680,000 upgrade was delivered by the NSW Government under the Saving Lives on Country Roads initiative, part of the Safer Roads Program.

"The Castlereagh Highway is a vital route for motorists, linking Lithgow and Mudgee, and the safety improvements on this 2.6-kilometre stretch of road north of Glen Davis Road at Capertee is a win for all road users," Mr Toole said.

"This section of road previously had little to no road shoulder, and a history of crashes, warranting the need for the upgrade.

"Investigations revealed in the five years to June 2016, there were four crashes, with three resulting in serious injuries on this section of road. All of the crashes involved vehicles running off the road on curves.

"The safety upgrades included installing additional signs, roadside barriers and wider road shoulders.

"This is about delivering small projects that have a big impact on saving lives."
