Work to improve safety on the Great Western Highway 30 kilometres west of Lithgow at Diamond Swamp Road is set to start today.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said work will include upgrading the existing road to strengthen it, providing a safer and more reliable road surface on a 1.5-kilometre section of the Great Western Highway.

“This section of the highway is a key route for residents, commuters and visitors to the area, providing an important link between Sydney and Bathurst,” Mr Toole said.

“As someone who drives the Great Western Highway regularly, I know this project will deliver a safer route, and in all weather conditions.

“Strengthening the road surface will improve safety for motorists and also reduce ongoing maintenance, ensuring it serves the community for decades to come.”

The NSW Government has provided $2 million for this road pavement upgrade as part of the Pavement Rehabilitation Program.

Work starts on Wednesday night, and to minimise disruption to motorists, will be carried out at night between 7pm and 6am from Monday to Saturday. The project will be completed in one month, weather permitting

A 40 km/h speed limit will be in place during work hours for the safety of motorists and workers.

Mr Toole said today’s announcement for the latest Great Western Highway safety upgrades follow on from:
- The recent completion of a $2.1 million highway upgrade at the intersection of Range Road between Bathurst and Lithgow;
- and last week’s announcement of an $8 million safety upgrade for a 2km stretch of the highway near the Meadow Flat Public School.
