The new Gunnedah rail overpass is one step closer to reality, as the NSW Government continues to deliver vital infrastructure projects to regional economies.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said all girders were now in place and work has begun on the bridge deck during the evolving COVID-19 situation because of the project’s long-term value to regional communities.

“We’re powering ahead with projects like this, with the appropriate safeguards in place, because we understand just how important investments are to regional economies in this difficult time,” Mr Toole said.

“This $61 million project has already provided about 60 jobs, showing our continued commitment to building up regional economies.”

Member for Tamworth and Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation Kevin Anderson said the new 195-metre long bridge will benefit locals and freight operators by connecting the Oxley Highway with Warrabungle Street when complete.

“The project team worked to a tight schedule earlier this year when placing the concrete girders over the rail line and completed the job with time to spare,” Mr Anderson said.

“This complex task had to be carried out while the rail line was closed for maintenance and the team worked around the clock to complete the task within the allotted 72 hours.

“Work has now started on forming the bridge deck with concrete pours being carried out.

“The project team has temporarily closed View Street to finish work on the new roundabout, with New Street now reopened to traffic. View Street is expected to reopen once work on the roundabout is complete in July, weather permitting.”
