Overtaking lanes at Bundaburrah now open

5 March 2020

Motorists can expect a safer and quicker drive along the Newell Highway with two new overtaking lanes now open at Bundaburrah.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the opening of the north and southbound overtaking lanes south of Forbes would provide more efficient journeys for motorists along the Newell.

“This project is being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s $500 million commitment to improve safety and travel times along the Newell Highway,” Mr Toole said.

“We are rolling these lanes out as quickly as possible with local motorists and freight operators already seeing the benefits.

“Seven lanes have been opened to traffic since the program started in March 2019 and a further five are currently under construction.”

Mr Toole said by partnering with the Newell Highway Alliance, the lanes were able to be delivered in half the time of traditional procurement methods.

“We want these infrastructure projects to drive economic activity in the bush, with more than 100 locals and regional businesses having already benefitted from the program,” Mr Toole said.

“Supplier and community information sessions were recently held to provide local businesses and community members the opportunity to learn how they can be involved in the overtaking lane projects.”

The NSW Government’s $500 million upgrade to the Newell Highway includes the addition of about 30 overtaking lanes over four years, which once complete, will cut 25 minutes of travel time.
