Final stage of $340 million Schofields Road upgrade to start next year

14 December 2015

Work on the third and final stage of the Schofields Road upgrade between Veron and Richmond roads at Schofields has moved a step closer, with the construction contract awarded to BMD Constructions Pty Ltd.

Roads Minister Duncan Gay and Member for Riverstone Kevin Conolly announced the NSW Government is working to progressively upgrade Schofields Road to four lanes between Windsor and Richmond roads, as part of a $340 million commitment to improve capacity along this key east-west corridor in the North West Growth Centre.

“With the region expected to expand by around 200,000 residents in the next 20-30 years, we are building roads now to increase traffic efficiency and reduce congestion for Sydney’s booming outer north-west,” Mr Gay said.

Work on the $140 million stage three is expected to start early next year and includes a 2.5 kilometre upgrade to extend Schofields Road to four lanes from Veron to Richmond roads, with the capacity to widen to six lanes in the future.

The project will feature 600 metre twin bridges across Eastern Creek and Bells Creek, the installation of traffic lights at Carnarvon Road and an extension of Fermoy Rd where an intersection upgrade is planned.

“Pedestrians, cyclists and commuters will also benefit with off road shared paths to be built on both sides of the road to increase safety, and bus bays and bus priority lanes at major intersections to improve traffic flow,” Mr Gay said.

Mr Conolly said the Schofields Road upgrade aims to improve travel for road users between the Rouse Hill and future Marsden Park town centres, Schofields Railway Station and future Sydney Metro stations.

“The upgrade of stage two between Tallawong Road and Veron Road has been fast tracked by a $70 million commitment from the Housing Acceleration Fund, with work well under way and expected to be completed by early 2017, weather permitting,” Mr Conolly said.

Work on Schofields Road stage three is expected to be completed in mid-2018, weather permitting.
