PROGRESS towards a stronger national road network has continued with Pacific Complete officially awarded the contract for the delivery partner role to deliver the final section of the Pacific Highway upgrade between Woolgoolga and Ballina.

The delivery partner contract between Roads and Maritime and Pacific Complete was signed in Sydney this morning.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the announcement continued the Australian Government’s $5.64 billion commitment to completing the full duplication of the highway by the end of the decade.

“Pacific Complete will be responsible for managing the delivery of the remaining 155 kilometres of the duplication, with this section of road forming an important link between Hexham and the Queensland border,” Mr Truss said.

“This project will support the efficient movement of freight traffic and ensure that Australia continues to get goods to domestic and international markets efficiently.

“During construction peak, 4,000 people will work directly on this project, with a further 12,000 working indirectly on the upgrade, continuing the Government’s commitment to delivering jobs and prosperity to all Australians.”

New South Wales Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Duncan Gay said the extensive upgrades would be a boost for the NSW economy, and for local residents and businesses.

“This region supports key industries and today’s announcement will come as welcome relief to local businesses that are reliant on strong transport links to remain competitive,” Mr Gay said.

“The Woolgoolga to Ballina upgrade is the ‘final link’ in the highway duplication to a four-lane divided road between Brisbane and Melbourne, ensuring local and interstate traffic move more efficiently.

“With the installation of new rest areas, improved flood mitigation measures and upgraded bridges, all motorists will enjoy a safer, reliable and more efficient road.”

The project is jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales governments on an 80:20 basis.
