Tenders open for Narellan Road upgrade
16 June 2015
TENDERS are now open for Stage Two of the $114 million upgrade of Narellan Road in Western Sydney.
Assistant Minister for Infrastructure Jamie Briggs said the upgrade plays a key role in the Australian and New South Wales governments plans to transform this vital part of Sydney.
“Western Sydney is set to grow from two million to three million people over the next 20 years, we are investing in world class infrastructure upgrades now to create thousands of jobs and support the needs of residents and businesses in the region,” Mr Briggs said.
“The Narellan Road upgrade will create a 6.8 kilometre six-lane road between Camden Valley Way and Blaxland Road, ensuring the South West Growth Centre is adequately supported by quality infrastructure.
“This is yet another indication we are wasting no time delivering our joint $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan and supports major works already underway including Narellan Road Stage One, Bringelly Road and Werrington Arterial.”
New South Wales Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Duncan Gay said the Narellan Road Stage Two upgrade will deliver significant benefits to Western Sydney motorists.
“Stage Two marks the final stage of the Narellan Road Upgrade and will deliver around 80 per cent of the overall works, widening 5.4 kilometres of the 6.8 kilometre project to six lanes," Mr Gay said.
"The upgrade will also remove two notorious bottlenecks by widening the southbound on-ramps from the Hume Motorway and installing traffic lights at Kenny Hill Road to improve peak hour traffic flow along the Narellan Road corridor.
“Stage Two will connect to the Stage One upgrade, which is progressing well and includes installing additional right turn lanes and access points to the TAFE/University of Western Sydney, removing congestion at this key pinch point.”
Federal Member for Macarthur Russell Matheson said the Narellan Road upgrade is a crucial investment in the area.
“Narellan Road is a vital link between the Hume Motorway, The Northern Road and the University of Western Sydney, and this project will ensure residents of Campbelltown, Narellan and surrounding areas spend less time stuck in traffic and more time at home,” Mr Matheson said.
New South Wales Member for Camden Chris Patterson said the project includes upgrades to deliver important safety benefits for motorists and the local community.
“A new purpose built response facility will be installed on Narellan Road, which will greatly improve accident response times on Narellan Road and the Hume Motorway and ensure traffic is returned to normal sooner,” Mr Patterson said.
“A new cable-stayed pedestrian bridge will also be installed over the Hume Motorway on the southern side of the existing bridge to improve safety for local residents.”
The Australian and New South Wales governments have committed $53 million and $61 million to the Narellan Road upgrade respectively.
Stage One of the upgrade started July 2014 and will be completed in 2016. Stage Two is expected to start in 2016 and be completed in 2019.
