Green light for Baird Street intersection
1 February 2021
Work to install a new set of traffic lights and a dedicated right turn lane will start this week at the intersection of Newell Highway and Baird Street in Dubbo.
Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders said work at the busy Dubbo thoroughfare will play a part in reducing congestion, and follows a number of recent upgrades, including footpath and drainage improvements.
“Feedback to community consultation for work on the Newell and Mitchell highway upgrade indicated traffic lights would improve traffic flow and safety at this key intersection,” Mr Saunders said.
“Motorists and cyclists turning right from the Newell Highway onto Baird Street will particularly benefit from the right turn lane.”
“Work to install the new turning lane and traffic lights at this intersection will support up to 16 jobs and three contracting companies.”
Work to install traffic lights will start on Tuesday 2 February and will be carried out on weeknights from 7pm to 6am for one week, weather permitting.
Work will continue on weekdays from Wednesday 10 February between 7am and 6pm and Saturdays from 8am to 5pm, until late February, weather permitting.
Work on the right turn lane is expected to start in March and be completed in late October, followed by the lights being switched on soon after.
Changed traffic conditions will be in place during work for the safety of workers and motorists including traffic control, lane closures and reduced speed limits and all efforts will be made to minimise noise by turning off machinery and vehicles when not in use.
Transport for NSW advises motorists to plan their journey, and thanks the community for their patience while work is carried out.
The improvements are being carried out as part of the $20 million Newell and Mitchell highway intersection upgrade funded by the NSW Government.
