Work starts to upgrade major Caringbah intersection

15 February 2019

Cronulla MP Mark Speakman and Miranda MP Eleni Petinos have announced motorists travelling through the intersection of Taren Point Road, The Boulevarde and Captain Cook Drive at Caringbah are closer to experiencing smoother journeys, with work starting today to ease congestion and improve pedestrian safety.

Ms Petinos said the announcement is great news for motorists, with around 70,000 vehicles using the intersection every day.

“The NSW Government is today kicking off work on its commitment to widen Taren Point Road southbound to provide an additional right turn lane into The Boulevarde,” Ms Petinos said.

“This major upgrade will help reduce travel times and deliver faster journeys for road users travelling towards Miranda, Gymea, Kirrawee, Sutherland and beyond.”

“Frustrating delays will also be reduced for motorists heading south towards Cronulla and east towards Woolooware, with road users currently held up behind vehicles waiting to turn right,” Mr Speakman said.

More than 1,600 students attend nearby Endeavour Sports and Caringbah High Schools, making this intersection a major hub for pedestrians, particularly during morning and afternoon peak times.

“The safety of students and the school community will be high on the agenda while this work is carried out on this upgrade,” Ms Petinos said.

“The upgrade includes relocating and widening the pedestrian crossing points at the traffic lights on The Boulevarde, and replacing the footpath and fencing on the north-west corner of the intersection,” Mr Speakman said.

“New pedestrian crossing lights will also be installed and new line markings added, to make it safer and easier for people to cross the road on each side of the intersection,” Mr Speakman said.

Work will be carried out on weekdays between 7am and 6pm, and between 8am and 1pm on Saturday.

Work may also take place on up to five nights a week between 8pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday, weather permitting and excluding public holidays.
